The Other Hinckley’s Heavenly Angels (And Other Awesome Experiences)
President Gordon B. Hinckley was a great prophet, in part,
perhaps, because he came from good stock. He was not the first Hinckley to be
called to the twelve. His Uncle Alonzo
A. Hinckley was asked to join as well – and only served 4 years before passing
on.
Alonzo was amazing
in his own right – he healed:
“…he healed a lame boy and promised a very sick woman that if she would
be baptized and have faith, she would be healed. Accordingly, in the dead of
winter a hole was cut in the ice and the ordinance was performed. She regained
her health, traveled to Utah, and became the mother of eleven children.” (https://rsc.byu.edu/archived/prophets-and-apostles-last-dispensation/members-quorum-o-f-twelve-apostles/58-alonzo-arza)
He was given the gift of
tongues:
“…Elder Alonzo A. Hinckley was a missionary in Holland who
understood and spoke very little Dutch even though he had prayed and studied
hard. When he returned to a home he had visited before, a lady opened the door
and spoke to him very angrily in Dutch. To his amazement he could understand
every word. He felt a strong desire to bear his testimony to her in Dutch. He
began to speak, and the words came out very clearly in Dutch. But when he
returned to show his mission president that he could speak Dutch, the ability
had left him.” (https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/study/manual/gospel-principles/chapter-22-the-gifts-of-the-spirit?lang=eng)
“Shortly before Alonzo died he went
to Southern California hoping that a change in climate might help him. While
there on one occasion he was pondering the fact that his health had not
permitted him to discharge his duties as an Apostle in a way that was satisfactory
to him. While in this mood his father Ira N Hinckley who had been dead for more
than 30 years appeared to him, and told him that he greatly needed his
assistance on the other side of the veil and that he had more work than he
could possibly do and really needed him. Alonzo explained that there was so
much here to do that his health had retarded him, and he would like to stay and
finish it. And so they talked face to face with one another. The experience was
repeated the second time and with the same results. Then his father appeared
for the third time and told him he would have to have him. That was his final
word. Soon after Alonzo returned to Salt Lake City and died, but not until
after he had fought a brave and gallant fight for his life, did he pass away in
peace to his great reward.(https://malcolmtwigg.files.wordpress.com/2015/05/visits-from-the-spirit-world-to-convey-a-message-or-inform-of-impending-death.pdf)
Now it’s been said
that Gordon B. Hinckley saw Christ himself (see this article for more on that). His Uncle Alonzo Hinckley also received heavenly visitors:
He got pretty sick
soon after being called – and then this:
“He only served four years as an
apostle before passing away. Before his death his daughter, Afton was with him
in his home in Salt Lake City. His other family was gone and there was a
indescribably sweet peaceful feeling in the home. Elder Hinckley invited his
daughter into his room saying, 'Come in, I have had a wonderful afternoon.
Three heavenly messengers dressed in the robes of the Holy Priesthood have been
my visitors.' He spake of the visitors as having the robes of the Holy
Priesthood and that they taught him a hymn…” (http://www.winslowfarrsr.org/alonzo-a-hinckley.html)
It's short, sweet and powerful. Kind of makes you wonder
what other amazing stories are buried in old, musty corners of the internet.
Only Google knows, I guess.
